Plane trips in the EU last year soared to 1 BILLION… and the largest number of passengers were from the UK

  • British people made up largest amount of passengers on Europe flights in 2018
  • More than a billion plane trips were taken in EU last year, up 43 per cent on 2010 
  • The data also revealed that Britain’s Heathrow was the busiest airport in Europe 

Britons fuelled record numbers of plane journeys in Europe last year, figures show.

Passengers made more than 1.1billion plane trips in the EU in 2018 – up 6 per cent on 2017 and 43 per cent since 2010.

The largest number of passengers recorded was for the UK – 272million, which was up 3 per cent on 2017.

Of these, 167,477 were to other EU countries while 81,053 were to non-EU destinations.

The data, released by the EU’s statistics agency Eurostat yesterday, also revealed that Heathrow was Europe’s busiest airport, with 80million passengers.

Second busiest was Charles de Gaulle in Paris, with 72million passengers. Gatwick was the eighth busiest, with 46million.
