Queensland couple John and Karen David transform Tamaree shed into bohemian bungalow

Creative house flippers have transformed a ‘glorified shed’ into a dreamy bohemian bungalow that has earned a loyal following on social media.

John and Karen David bought the shack in Tamaree near Gympie, 178km north of Brisbane, for $170,000 in October 2020 and gave it a highly ‘Instagrammable’ makeover through their construction company, Hampton Home Builders.

Six months of renovations have seen the property almost triple in value, as well as earning it the title of Queensland‘s second ‘most clicked on’ residential listing and the third most popular listing in Australia for the last week of April.

Interior designer Karen told Daily Mail Australia they intended to give the bungalow little more than a ‘splash of paint’, but fell in love with it after discovering ‘hidden treasures’ tucked inside.

‘It’s one of those projects that once you start you just keep finding things you want to change,’ she said.

The renovations cost ‘about double’ what the Davids paid for the property, Karen revealed, but the end result packs some serious wow factor.

Decorated in a luxurious coastal theme, the bungalow has a spacious open-plan living area, three bedrooms including a master suite with a walk-in wardrobe, and a designer kitchen with stone benchtops and a butler’s pantry.

The decor is inspired by the Hamptons, an upmarket Long Island community that serves as a summer playground for New York’s elite.

The area is famous for its iconic architecture, which is characterised by stately columns and exterior walls clad in white weatherboards with opulent finishes like Italian stone and marble behind the front door.

That style is best evidenced in the Tamaree shack in the raised whitewashed verandah that wraps around the rear.

Outside 1.5 acres of flat land is dotted with fruit trees, a barn-style car garage and a carport.

Living in the bungalow was never an option for the Davids and their four young children, but Karen is certain it will make an idyllic home for a couple or a smaller family.

‘Everyone who goes there says they’d love to have this,’ she said.

‘The area is so quiet. There’s kangaroos hopping in the yard and little butcher birds that come down and want to be fed. It’s just gorgeous.’
