The 20-year-old was arguably England’s best player on the night as he made his full debut for the Three Lions.

But he could now miss the opportunity to build on that promising performance after UEFA confirmed he cannot play in the forthcoming Nations League fixtures.

England face the Republic of Ireland in a friendly at Wembley on Thursday and James is eligible to play in that game.

However, it remains to be seen whether Southgate selects James in his squad given he cannot feature in either of England’s two competitive fixtures.

UEFA have also confirmed Harry Maguire has been suspended for one match following his sending off against Denmark.

The Manchester United defender was given his marching orders after picking up two yellow cards, meaning Maguire is banned for the crucial game in Belgium on Sunday.
