Insiders say winning back floating voters who have abandoned the Conservatives since Boris Johnson‘s reign may be Rishi Sunak‘s best hope of winning a General Election.
Polling expert and Tory peer Robert Hayward said some ex-Conservative backers were already returning to the fold as they were ‘beginning to like Rishi’.
The claims come amid alarm within Labour after a Deltapoll survey last week put Sir Keir Starmer‘s party ahead by just ten points – its lowest lead for months. But a separate survey showed Labour’s lead back up to 26, and there are increasing signs Sir Keir is looking to Scotland to make up votes.

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar told MP colleagues last week that the party – which currently has just one seat north of the border – was now on course to gain 14 seats.
Lord Hayward said a huge group of disillusioned former Tory voters – amounting to ten to 15 per cent of regular voters – could hold the key to a Sunak victory at the next General Election.
He said since 2019 they had ‘left the party in droves but they haven’t necessarily gone somewhere else’. However, he said these voters will need to be ‘convinced that they like the Tory Party again’ and admitted the balance of probability still pointed to a Labour victory.
