Sadio Mane says the 2020-21 campaign has been ‘the worst season’ of his career and that he hopes the ‘situation will pass’ in time.

The 29-year-old forward says he is unable to identify why he and his teammates have struggled to replicate the form that saw them end their 30-year wait for Premier League glory last season.

Mane even admitted to undergoing ‘tests’ to see if there was an issue with his body after ‘questioning’ himself all the time.

However, Mane’s tests confirmed ‘everything was fine’, causing the striker to realise life comes with ‘ups and downs’.

Speaking to Canal Plus, Mane said: ‘This is the worst season of my career. I have to admit it.

‘If you ask me what is wrong I will struggle to give you an answer. Personally I don’t know.

‘I have always tried to be positive, whether things are going well or badly. I question myself all the time.

‘I even underwent a test to take a look at my body. Am I eating the right foods, or has everything changed? But they checked the test results, and everything is fine.

‘I need to understand that in life there are ups and downs.

‘I will keep on working hard – and perhaps in time this situation will pass.’

Mane has been renowned for his goalscoring ability, having scored 20 goals in each of the last three seasons.

However, this season, Mane has only found the net a total of 14 times – with just nine of them coming in the Premier League.

Mane did get his name on the scoresheet during Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Southampton on Saturday – with the contribution marking his first goal at Anfield in 2021.

Mane will be eager to rediscover his form with Liverpool to cement his place in the squad after being linked with a potential transfer this summer.
