The Bundesliga side have other options but if Mustafi can agree to cancel his contract before 11pm tonight he would be free to join another club once the window is closed.

Liverpool are close to finalising a loan move for Kabak with the option to buy, leaving the struggling German club light at the back.

Mustafi, who joined Arsenal from Valencia in 2016 for £35million, has fallen out of favour under Mikel Arteta and has only featured nine times in all competitions.

Should he choose to leave Arsenal, Schalke would be willing to give the 28-year-old a contract until the summer.

Mustafi has made 151 appearances for the Gunners, scoring nine goals in his five years at the club.
