Scott Morrison breaks his silence on the drawn-out US election to reveal he will ‘await the outcome’ before he speaks with Donald Trump or Joe Biden

Scott Morrison has said he will not call either Donald Trump or Joe Biden until there is a clear winner in the US election.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday morning as the race remained tight, Mr Morrison said he has confidence in the US voting system despite Trump’s claims of fraud.

Biden looks set to win after taking Wisconsin and Michigan and Sportsbet has already paid out $23 million to 100,000 Aussies who backed him – but the prime minister refused to speculate on the winner.

Asked if he had reached out to Trump or Biden, he said: ‘It’s not appropriate at this time.

‘Obviously we have ongoing dealings with the US Government and that’s normal, but in terms of the political events in the United States, it’s the appropriate response to be patient and respectful. And that’s exactly what we’re doing.’
