Shoppers have been left baffled by a deceiving Maison Margiela earring designed to look like a tag holding a pair of gold hoops – and branded its £220 price tag ‘insulting’. 

The luxury French fashion house’s ‘Tag’ earring is marketed as a single piece, with the ‘cardboard’ made from white calfskin.

The gold pieces – made from brass – are detachable and can be worn as regular hoops.

The earring is now on sale through Ssense, reduced to £84 – but even at its lower price, shoppers weren’t convinced. 

Confused fashionistas took to Twitter to share their comments, with one asking whether they had been wearing earrings incorrectly their entire life.

Others were puzzled by the original high price of the accessory. 

Twitter user @doragzplora penned the original tweet which sparked the online outrage, writing: ‘*Online shopping* Oo this would be a nice basic set of earrings *swipes through photos* wait what.’ 

Her tweet went viral, racking up over 119,600 retweets and 528,300 likes – and other baffled users agreed, with one branding it: ‘Horrific.’

‘Have I been wearing them wrong this whole time? And also why are they so expensive?’ asked another bewildered shopper. 

Another Twitter user commented: ‘Imagine hanging a tag with earrings on from your ear,’ while one branded it ‘shoplifter chic’.

However some did seem to like the piece, with one person tweeting: ‘Is it weird that I actually like it?’ to which another replied: ‘I like it too? We’re in this together.’
