A road safety quiz about overtaking turning vehicles has infuriated Australians drivers, who said those who can’t answer the very simple overtaking question should be banned from the roads.

The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads shared a graphic showing a car attempting to maneuver around a turning truck to Facebook on Monday.

‘The blue car’s approaching an intersection behind the long white truck displaying a “DO NOT OVERTAKE TURNING VEHICLE” sign, which is turning left,’ the caption read.

The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads shared a graphic showing a car attempting to maneuver around a turning truck to quiz motorists on road rules

The image showed the truck positioned across two lanes as the blue car waited behind the vehicle.

‘Is the blue car allowed to cross the double line to overtake the truck?’, the Department asked.

Poll

Can blue car cross the double line to overtake the truck?

Social media users flocked to the comments section to share their answers.

‘Stay behind and wait till the truck goes. Stay in your own lane,’ one user said.

‘No, it’s illegal to cross a double line. Secondly, the back of the truck may swing out over the lane,’ another commented.

Other motorists were outraged at the ‘incompetence’ and ‘impatience’ of drivers who would cross the double lines.

‘People would seriously cross the lines to go past? I must admit I’ve not witnessed that level of impatience yet,’ one said.

‘Have some patience and wait for the truck to turn,’ another suggested.

One driver simply said: ‘Does this really need to be asked? Some people shouldn’t be allowed to drive.’

The Department of Transport and Main Roads confirmed that the blue car is not allowed to cross the double line to overtake the truck.

Sharing the road with heavy vehicles

1. Stay out of the heavy vehicle blind spots

If you cannot see the truck driver’s mirror, the truck driver cannot see you

2. Travel at a safe following distance

Do not follow a heavy vehicle too closely, as you want to have space to stop and see what is ahead – such as debris and other cars

3. Look out for turning heavy vehicles

Heavy vehicles that have a DO NOT OVERTAKE TURNING VEHICLE sign are allowed to take up more than one lane to turn at corners, intersections and roundabouts.

4. Overtaking safely around heavy vehicles

If travelling on the motorway/highway, try to use overtaking lanes whenever possible

When it is safe to overtake, indicate, accelerate and overtake quickly, without exceeding the speed limit

Never attempt to overtake a heavy vehicle or other long heavy vehicle on a curve or hill as your visibility is reduced
