Stoke City have confirmed that Ryan Shawcross has ended his tenure at the club, leaving him free to join David Beckham‘s Inter Miami side in the US.

In a statement on Friday, the club said Shawcross’ contract has been terminated by mutual consent, allowing the 33-year-old to ‘pursue new playing opportunities in the United States’ and close in on his move to the MLS franchise.

Stoke chief executive Tony Scholes called Shawcross an ‘outstanding role-model, both on and off the pitch’ and said his contribution to the Potters after 14 years with the club ‘cannot be overstated’.

Shawcross made more than 450 appearances for Stoke, who he joined from Manchester United in 2008 for £1million.

After suffering a leg break in the summer of 2019, Shawcross has struggled for game time with the Potters, making just two appearances in the Championship this season.

Stoke manager Michael O’Neill said: ‘Ryan has an exciting opportunity ahead of him which I know he’s keen to grasp and I wish him nothing but success for the future.

‘He hasn’t figured as often as he would have liked over the past couple of years but his professionalism and the way he has conducted himself, both on the training ground and around the club, since I joined simply cannot be questioned.’
