Surrey have put their players on furlough for the first time after Chancellor Rishi Sunak extended the job support scheme for the second lockdown earlier this week.

Sportsmail has learned that all of Surrey’s playing and coaching staff have been placed on furlough for November, although director of cricket Alec Stewart will continue to work for the club part-time as a result of the government’s flexi-furlough scheme.

The decision to take advantage of the scheme will save Surrey around £100,000 per month as they battle to cope with the impact of Covid-19, which has had a devastating impact on their cricket and hospitality business.

The club’s revenue for 2020 is projected for fall from £45million to around £13m, although they are well placed to recover if spectators are permitted to attend matches next summer.

Lancashire are now the only county who have not put players on furlough, although their position is understood to be under review and will be discussed next week.

The Old Trafford club are utilising a combination of furlough and flexi-furlough to help pay the wages of some of their administrative staff and are considering extending this policy to include players.
