Good deed or flouting the law? Group of mates warn motorists that police are hidden around a corner – ‘saving’ dozens of drivers from being fined for making illegal left hand turns

  • A group of men started warning drivers not to fall into the police trap
  • Social media users praised the men for being ‘heroes’ and preventing big fines

A group of men have won online praise after video emerged of them warning drivers against making a commonly-used illegal left-hand turn because police were lying in wait around the corner.

The video showed a New South Wales Police car waiting on Princess Street, Brighton-Le-Sands in Sydney’s south, where it is illegal to turn left off The Grand Parade after 9pm on weekends.

A group of friends who live in the area decided to wait on the corner to Princess Street and caution drivers against making the illegal turn, frustrating police hopes of catching drivers in the act.

‘Coppers, coppers!’

Another said: ‘No, no, no, no don’t go!’

The group, which can be heard laughing while referring to the police as ‘dogs’ claim to have ‘saved’ an estimated 50 drivers from being penalised.

Several social media users claimed the men were the heroes.

One social media user said: ‘What feels illegal but isn’t’.

Another said: ‘You policed this corner better than the police’.

One person said her father has been fined at that same spot and it is notorious for getting motorists into trouble, because during the day it is legal to turn left.
