Mothers across the country are set to wake up to breakfast in bed and perhaps a surprise gift or two as families celebrate their mum’s special day. 

Millions of Australians intend to spoil their mums on Sunday with everything from flowers to pyjamas, according to last-minute research. 

A survey of nearly a thousand people has found out what the most popular gifts children – with possibly a little help from dad – have bought for the occasion.

More than a quarter (26 per cent) of us will choose a Mother’s Day bouquet, says a national survey by comparison site Finder.

A card (20 per cent)

Chocolates (19 per cent)

Jewellery (12 per cent)

A meal out (12 per cent)

Pyjamas (12 per cent)

Nothing (8 per cent)

Mother’s Day cards (20 per cent) and chocolates (19 per cent) were the next most popular choices among 913 respondents surveyed late Friday afternoon.

In total, 62 per cent of Aussies said they planned to get mum ‘something’ for Mother’s Day.

A tad over $100 was the average spend for gifts. Men will apparently fork out an average of $128 and women $87.

Gen Xers shape as the most generous gift-givers for dear old mum, with an average budget of $126. Younger Gen Z respondents don’t have pockets quite as deep, with the Zoomers spending an average of $94.

Geographically, South Australians ($108) will spend most, closely followed by sons, daughters and grandchildren in NSW and WA (both $107).

Queenslanders plan to spend $76 on average.

‘Being a mum can be a demanding, and at times thankless job, so having a dedicated day to celebrate mothers is a really lovely occasion for many of us,’ said personal finance expert Kate Browne.

‘There’s still a day to go until Mother’s Day, so if you haven’t bought mum a present yet, it’s definitely time to get cracking.’
