Nostalgic shoppers have discovered a $3 snack that tastes almost as good as the classic Australian chips Tasty Toobs.

The Reject Shop is selling Snack Lovers Barbecue Tubes that looks nearly identical to the iconic chips, which haven’t been on shelves since 2015.

The tangy, tomato-flavoured Tasty Toobs were one of the most memorable snack icons of the 70s, and were brought back into production in 2007 after a six-year gap.

But the fan-favourite snacks were discontinued again by Smith’s in 2015 amid a lack of consumer demand.

Following years of lobbying, fans of the snack have found an alternative.

Many said the replica doesn’t taste exactly like the Tasty Toobs – but it’s the closest snack they will ever get to the original.

‘OMG it’s so good to have the taste of Toobs again,’ one shopper wrote.

A second said: ‘I have been the biggest Toobs fan for 30 years. After buying a bag from The Reject Shop, they sell out like hot cakes. The store manager says it’s one one thing that sells out the quickest the resemblance is on par.’

A third added: ‘Obviously nothing is going to be as good or taste like the real deal Toobs, but an alternative that is almost as good is The Reject Shop “Toobs”.

‘They are the next best thing that is being sold. I’d rather the next best thing than none at all, but that’s just me.’

However not everyone was impressed with the ‘knock off’, with many suggesting ‘it’s Toobs or nothing’ while others said the ‘taste is there’ but the brand needed to add ‘five times the amount of flavour’ to be close to the original.

‘I had these snack lovers ones from The Reject Shop and they were ok, close taste but so so weak in amount of flavour,’ one woman wrote.

Another said: ‘Got these the other week. They just need to double the flavouring and it would be decent.’

Others said the brand also has a ‘hot and spicy’ flavoured version, which is ‘better’ than the barbecue’ chips.

‘They are not really spicy. When I tried the chilli ones, they seem to taste more like the original Toobs,’ one man revealed.

For the past six years, thousands of fans have been calling on Smith’s Chips to bring back its beloved Tasty Toobs – but to no avail.

Nearly 18,000 fans are part of a Facebook group called ‘Bring Back TOOBS’ in the hope the brand re-launches the snacks.

Australian cricketer Shane Warne previously launched a social media campaign calling for the cheesy treats to return, with the hashtag #BringBackToobs.
