Tory MP is blasted for misspelling name of village where she wants to meet constituents – and getting the postcode wrong too

  • Katherine Fletcher made two glaring errors on a flier to constituents
  • MP for South Ribble, Lancashire misspelt the village Eccleston as Ecclestone

A Tory MP has been blasted for incorrectly spelling the name of a village where she plans to meet her constituents.

Katherine Fletcher also printed the wrong postcode for the venue where she plans to listen to any problems raised by local residents.

A flier distributed by her office contained two glaring errors – much to the anger of residents who also complained that the only time she has set aside for the meeting is in the middle of the afternoon when many are at work.

Staff working for the MP for South Ribble in Lancashire sent out the error strewn flier to local residents to publicise a chance to meet and talk with her about local concerns.

The hour-long session is being held at the Caffé Manna in the village of Eccleston, near Chorley.

But on the colour flier – featuring a picture of the MP working at her desk – the village is spelled with an extra ‘e’ as Ecclestone.

Its postcode is given as PR5 5SZ – a location that is seven miles from the Café. The correct postcode is PR7 5SZ.

One resident said: ’I have just received a leaflet from Katherine Fletcher MP’s office inviting the local village to a local cafe to have one hour to raise any questions with her and meet her.

‘The only problem is, she has spelt the name of the village wrong and has put a postcode on it which is a location 7 miles away from the cafe!

‘She has no regard for our village or the people in it and can’t even spell it’s name correctly.’

Fletcher,46, was elected for the first time to Parliament in 2019.

She was appointed Minister for Women during Liz Truss’s short lived tenure as Prime Minister and has served as under secretary of state in the Department of Transport.

Her constituency includes three borough councils, South Ribble, Chorley and West Lancs comprising a population of 74,000.

The planned meeting with residents in Eccleston is due to take place on July 26th – but there are complaints at its timing.

One resident said:’ She is very, very difficult to contact since she was elected in 2019 so I am sure many people will wish to see her.

‘She is only making herself available for one hour at 3-4pm on a Wednesday when most people are still at work. It is ludicrous!’

In response to the poster errors Katherine Fletcher told Mail Online:’ It was a printing error on one poster and it has now been changed.

I have had a great response from local people about my Meet Your MP events taking place across South Ribble in locations like Higher and Lower Penwortham, Eccleston, Longton, Croston, Rufford, Mawdesley and Tarleton over the coming week.

‘I am certainly looking forward to meeting residents to hear their thoughts and concerns. That is a big part of being a visible MP.

‘Unfortunately, it is not possible to set up every meeting at a time that will be convenient for everyone.

‘For those residents who cannot make the meeting, I hold surgeries at my office in Leyland nearly every Friday and I can also offer virtual surgeries.’
