Trent Alexander-Arnold ‘is not expected to make Gareth Southgate‘s England squad’ for Euro 2020 despite his strong end-of-season form for Liverpool.

The 22-year-old right-back was surprisingly omitted from the last England squad for a trio of World Cup qualifiers in March.

And even though UEFA has expanded squad sizes from 23 players to 26 for the tournament that gets underway on June 11, Alexander-Arnold still appears set to miss out.

The Athletic report there has been no contact between the England camp and Liverpool regarding Alexander-Arnold although there is still time with Southgate set to announce the squad on Tuesday.

England are blessed with options in the right-back position and it would appear the likes of Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker and potentially Reece James will take precedence.

Back in March, Southgate said that Alexander-Arnold had not ‘hit that level he’s hit with Liverpool for England.’

The defender has completed the full 90 minutes just four times in his 12 internationals appearances but has started 10 times.

Southgate’s decision to leave Alexander-Arnold out of the March matches against San Marino, Albania and Poland drew a rebuke from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

He said shortly after the internationals: ‘I didn’t understand it because Trent Alexander-Arnold was in the last two seasons at least – let me say the season before and the season before that – the stand-out right-back in world football.

‘That is the truth and he did it at an unbelievable young age. He was the stand-out right-back in world football.’

Klopp added: ‘If Alexander-Arnold is not in the squad of England then England must have an extremely good squad, let me say it like this.

‘As a summary, I respect the decision, of course I do, but I didn’t understand it.’

Having helped Liverpool win the Champions League and then the Premier League in consecutive seasons, Alexander-Arnold has scored two goals and contributed nine assists in 2020-21.

His form since being left out by England in March has been particularly impressive, with Liverpool making a well-timed late surge to clinch a Champions League spot on the final day.

England kick-off their Euro 2020 campaign against Croatia at Wembley on March 13 and have also been paired with Scotland and the Czech Republic in their group.
