‘Is he skint?’: Tyson Fury’s dad John claims Floyd Mayweather is making a ‘mockery’ of boxing amid talk of him facing YouTube sensation Logan Paul

  • Floyd Mayweather was crowned the world’s richest athlete by Forbes in 2018
  • He was also named the highest earning sportsperson of the previous decade
  • But allegations have since emerged that he has squandered his built-up fortune
  • And John Fury has hinted at a similar claim amid talk of his fight with Logan Paul

Tyson Fury‘s dad John claims Floyd Mayweather is ridiculing boxing amid talk of fighting Youtuber Logan Paul after becoming the latest to question if he is now skint.

The retired champion, who ended his career with an undefeated 50-0 record, was crowned the world’s richest athlete by Forbes in 2018 having earned £220m ($285m) that year.

The American business magazine also named him as the highest earning sportsperson of the previous decade, having made £706m ($915m) in the period 2010-19.

But rapper 50 Cent has been among those to claim Mayweather has squandered his fortune, and now Fury’s dad has made a similar allegation discussing Mayweather’s rumoured fight with YouTube sensation Logan Paul.

The 56-year-old told iFL TV: ‘It’s making a mockery of boxing isn’t it? Come on, Floyd.

‘Is he skint or something? He’s got all the money in the world. A man of his calibre messing with a YouTuber?

‘I can backhand Logan Paul! Not even fighters are they? They’re YouTubers.

‘He wouldn’t fight Tommy [Fury] so what the hell’s he going in with Mayweather for? The pound for pound best in the world.

‘Come on Floyd, get your act together mate. Stop ridiculing the sport with these idiots for a few quid. You’ve got enough money.

‘You know these billionaires, what their biggest problem is? How to make another million on top of the hundreds of millions they’ve already got.

‘It worries them and they lose sleep over it.’

Asked whether the fight made sense from a marketing point of view, Fury added: ‘I’m a hardcore boxing nut, so you can’t put c**p in front of me and expect me to enjoy it.

‘What you going to enjoy the most – beans or toast or steak? The steak.

‘I don’t know what they’re doing. They’re just trying to get viewing figures and money.’

Mayweather was unrivaled in making millions from showcase fights, earning £78.5m from his victory against Conor McGregor in 2017 .

He even reportedly made just a tad more than £2.5m a minute when defeating kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa a year later.

But despite the 43-year-old American denying the ‘crazy’ claims he has spent a vast chunk of his considerable fortune – believed to have been more than $1billion – reports have emerged he has lost a considerable amount of what he made during his career to jewellery and lavish parties.
