  • The centre half is likely to miss the rest of the season after having knee operation
  • He sustained anterior cruciate ligament damage from Jordan Pickford’s tackle

Liverpool‘s Georginio Wijnaldum has given an update on Virgil van Dijk‘s situation following knee surgery, admitting the centre half is going through hell but staying ‘very strong’.

Van Dijk is likely to miss the rest of the season after having an operation on his anterior cruciate ligament following a rash challenge by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in last month’s Merseyside derby.

Reds midfielder Wijnaldum branded Pickford’s tackle ‘stupid’ following the tackle and has now shed light on his team-mate’s condition.

‘Virgil will return with God’s will,’ he told VI, while away on international duty with Holland.

‘It is a difficult time for him; this is the worst thing you can experience as a football player.

‘You go through hell. But I think he is very strong. We FaceTime every now and then and that is very nice.’

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have coped valiantly without their colossal centre back with Fabinho, Rhys Williams, Nathaniel Phillips and Joel Matip all stepping up in Van Dijjk’s absence.

They’re unbeaten since the clash at Goodison Park on October 17 and consequently are just one point behind league leaders Leicester.

However the champions’ injury problems are mounting up with right back Trent Alexander-Arnold the latest star to join Van Dijk on the sidelines. The England international sustained a calf injury in Liverpool’s 1-1 draw at Manchester City at the weekend and is set to be out for up to four weeks.
