He said: ‘Every team needs players to go to war (Nicolo) Barella and I, as well as Lautaro (Martinez) and (Marcelo) Brozovic, we are crazy in the head! But we give ourselves energy.

‘The games against Milan, Atalanta and Lazio were still waiting for us. Compared to last year, we have won more direct clashes. We have shown we are stronger. After the win against Atalanta, I said to myself: ‘OK, we are really there for the Scudetto’.’

The 91-cap international also praised strike partner Lautaro Martinez and team-mates Achraf Hakimi and Barella.

He added: ‘When I saw him (Martinez) for the first time, I told him within two years we would win some trophies together. We work for the team – if I realise that he’s in a better position, I always search for him.

‘Hakimi has integrated very well. Now, he’s very important. Barella is the voice of the team. Every team needs players ready to go to war and we have so many of them.’

Up next Conte’s side travel to Juventus on Saturday before hosting Udinese on the final day of the domestic campaign.
