West Bromwich Albion want £18million for coveted goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

The 28-year-old has performed valiantly despite his side’s toil against relegation this season.

He has one year left on contract and has begun to attract interest from Premier League rivals such as West Ham, Tottenham and Leeds United.

Albion recognise they will struggle to keep Johnstone should they go down but they are not prepared to let him go without a fight.

They value the former England U20 international highly and it is understood want optimum price from any suitors for a goalkeeper of his standing.

Johnstone has made more saves than any other goalkeeper in the Premier League this season, an indication of the pressure he has been under this campaign.

However, England manager Gareth Southgate selected him for the World Cup qualifying triple header against San Marino, Albania and Poland in March, saying: ‘I’ve not worked with Sam since I was with the U21s. Now, he’s had several seasons of league football under his belt. Although the club have had a difficult season, Sam has maintained a good level of performance.’

Johnstone will have an England place in mind when he chooses his next club with the opportunity for regular first team football a priority in his decision.

Though Albion have yet to receive any formal enquiries, Sam Allardyce has said they will discuss Johnstone’s future once Albion’s Premier League status is resolved.
