Who has to give way? Australians left puzzled over a ‘simple’ road rule question involving four cars at an intersection

  • The QLD Department of Transport and Main Roads posted a quiz on social media
  • Alongside a graphic of cars at an intersection, they asked who had to give way
  • The simple question left some Australians baffled

A simple road rule question asking which of three cars has to give way at an intersection has left Australians baffled.

The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads posted a quiz to social media this week to test motorists’ knowledge.

The graphic shows four vehicles in different lanes approaching an intersection.

On the main road, a bus and a green car are travelling in opposite directions and want to continue going straight, while a red and orange car travelling in opposite directions on the crossing road each have a give way sign.

The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads posted a quiz alongside a graphic (pictured) asking ‘if you are the orange car, what cars must you give way to’

The red car is travelling straight across the intersection while the orange car on the is turning right into the main road.

‘You know your road rules, and now’s your chance to prove it,’ the department wrote.

‘You are driving the orange car. You must give way to A. Both the green car and the bus, B. Green car only, C. The green car, the bus and the red car or D. Red car only.’

Social media users flocked to the comment section to share their answers.

‘C. all vehicles,’ one person wrote.

Another added: ‘A.’

‘Orange must give way to bus and green car then give way to red car so answer is A,’ a third comment read.

‘Depends how quick the orange car is,’ a fourth said.

The Government department later commented on the post to reveal the answer to  drivers.

‘The answer is C. The orange car and the red car are facing give way signs. When two drivers face each other at give way signs at an intersection they must give way to all other vehicles entering or approaching the intersection,’ they wrote.

‘This means the orange car must give way to the green vehicle and the bus. Then the orange and red cars must apply the give way rules to each other.’

‘The orange car is turning right across the path of the red car, so it must give way to the oncoming red car that is going straight ahead at the intersection.’

Motorists were quick to slam those who answered the question incorrectly.

‘Absolutely embarrassing the number of people while licensed [sic] have absolutely no idea how to drive,’ one person wrote.

‘Please if you get this wrong then you are done with driving,’ another said.
