Woman in her 30s dies after becoming trapped under a boat after two vessels collided off Great Yarmouth

A woman has died after she became trapped under a boat which crashed in Great Yarmouth today. 

Paramedics, RNLI lifeboats, HM Coastguard patrol officers and Norfolk Police rushed to the scene following reports of a collision involving two vessels in the River Bure in North Quay, Norfolk, at 1.35pm.    

Despite the efforts of the emergency services, the woman, who is in her 30s and from London, was pronounced dead at the scene.  

It is understood the woman was knocked into the river after the boat hit a wall near Great Yarmouth Yacht Station.

Today police officers were seen patrolling the area and a cordon remained in place at the scene.            

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the incident and how the woman fell into the water. 

A statement from Norfolk Constabulary Police read: ‘Officers were called just before 1.35pm on Wednesday 19 August to reports a woman had become trapped under a boat on the River Bure at North Quay.

‘Officers attended the scene, along with Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service, the Coastguard and the East of England Ambulance Service, however, the woman, aged in her 30s and from the London area, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

‘A cordon has been put in place around the boat and enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the incident and how the woman came to be in the water.

‘Lawn Avenue, which was closed earlier today whilst emergency services were on scene, has now been reopened.’

Earlier today the BBC tweeted: ‘Emergency services are at Great Yarmouth Yacht Station dealing with what’s been described as a ”very serious incident”.

‘Humber coastguard has confirmed 2 vessels were in collision. Lawn Avenue is now closed from Fullers Hill to the Bus Depot.’  

Broads National Park in Norfolk also confirmed the river between Breydon Water and Stracey Arms had been closed. 

A message on Twitter read: ‘Due to an ongoing incident on the River Bure at Great Yarmouth, the river between Breydon Water and Stracey Arms is closed until further notice.’
