Would you serve McDonald’s on your big day? Wedding planner insists it’s ‘absolutely disgusting’ to give guests fast food – but GMB viewers are divided

A bride chomping on a Big Mac is not what springs to mind when you a picture a traditional wedding, and a furious debate has broken out on GMB over whether it’s ever aceeptable to serve fast food.

Raj Somaiya, who is one of the UK’s best-known wedding planners, branded the idea ‘absolutely disgusting’ and said it would be like ‘taking the heart out of a wedding’.

Meanwhile, journalist and writer Floral Gill, who was also appearing on the breakfast show, said ‘you should have whatever food you want’ on your big day.

Following results from a YouGov survey, which claimed that one in five Brits would prefer to eat McDonald’s or KFC at a wedding reception, GMB asked viewers on X (formally Twitter) if they thought a takeaway was acceptable nuptial nosh.

The poll received almost 4,500 votes, with the majority (57 per cent) saying takeaway food should not be served on such a special occasion.

Raj, who is a judge on BBC2’s Ultimate Wedding Planner, explained there is a specific etiquette that should be followed, and a wedding breakfast should be an opulent three-course meal that reflects the ceremony.

‘There’s a time and a place for nuggets,’ he said.

‘You have this gorgeous wedding, you go to church to get married, and then you have this beautiful wedding breakfast, a two-hour extravaganza of speeches, toasts, cake cuttings, and then you have your disco.

‘When you have your wedding breakfast, it has to be a three-course meal, and it’s beautiful and elegant and adds ambiance to the wedding.’

Pointing to a plate of McDonald’s food, he added: ‘That doesn’t.’

Flora disagreed and insisted that anything goes at a wedding, saying: ‘If you love nuggets, if you love burgers, if you love pizza, then that’s what you should have.’

Good Morning Britain asked viewers on Twitter if they thought a takeaway was acceptable nuptial nosh, but 57% said it was unacceptable

‘Do you know what is nice cooked in bulk? Fast food,’ she continued.

‘Food isn’t the heart of a wedding, the people are the heart of a wedding.’

Several viewers agreed with Flora, with one describing her own wedding breakfast at a Toby Carvery as ‘brilliant’.

Meanwhile, another explained how her local fish and chip shop delivered food in takeaway boxes and ‘everybody loved it’.

It seems that several celebrities are also willing to serve fast food on their wedding day. Singer Olly Murs recently shared snaps from his lavish summer nuptials to Amelia Tank, where they were pictured enjoying chicken nuggets from a McDonald’s truck.

Whereas Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz provided guests with cheeseburgers, fries and chicken nuggets from a Wendy’s food truck during their £3m wedding afterparty.

Raj later admitted it would be better to transport guests directly to McDonald’s as the food would at least be fresh.
