‘I’m glad its finished… it is going to lift his confidence’: Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta delighted Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ended his five-game Premier League goal drought in victory away at Manchester United

  • Arsenal finally beat one of the Premier League’s Big Six away from home again
  • The Gunners secured a 1-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday afternoon
  • Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored the only goal of the game from penalty spot
  • It is only his second goal of the season, with his first coming on the opening day

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has expressed his relief after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang brought to an end his five-game Premier League goal drought on Sunday.

Arsenal finally overcame Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Premier League for the first time since 2006, winning 1-0 thanks to Aubameyang’s second half penalty.

It was also the Gunners’ first victory away at a Big Six side since they beat Manchester City in January 2015.

But perhaps more importantly to Arteta was that his talisman finally ended his worrying goal drought in the Premier League, having only netted on the opening day of the season before Sunday.

‘I’m glad it’s finished. Every striker needs goals and in these moments we have to create more for Auba,’ Arteta told BBC’s Match of the Day.

‘He has scored the crucial goal and it is going to lift his confidence,’ Arteta added following the final whistle.

Before Sunday’s match, it was Aubameyang’s worst run in front of goal since back in 2014 with Borussia Dortmund.

Arsenal dominated proceedings for the majority of Sunday’s game at Old Trafford, with Mikel Arteta executing his game plan thanks to brilliant displays from the likes of Gabriel Magalhaes, Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny.

It was a huge victory for the Gunners after losing three of their previous four Premier League encounters.

The victory has moved Arsenal up to ninth in the top-flight, with 12 points from their opening seven matches.

It is hugely bunched up at the top, with Arsenal only four points off leaders and last season’s champions Liverpool.
