A bizarre and slighty creepy image uploaded by popular TikTok account @unseenillusions has left tens of users on the social app divided and scratching their heads over the total number of fingers they can count.
The brainteaser account regularly posts baffling optical illusions, puzzles and riddles for its 37,500 followers to analyse and solve.
Shared in September 2021, the post has since amassed almost 300 likes and over 100 comments, as perplexed people are asked: ‘How many fingers are there?’
The still image comprises of an artificially altered photo of a human hand against a black background – but with several smaller hands attached to the ends of each finger.

With a large number of total fingers in the image, puzzlers are asked to guess the correct number.
A variety of answers were provided by 139 users, with many insisting their guess was correct, while others lost count and gave up entirely.
55 and 150 appeared to be of the most commonly guessed answers, while others came close with conclusions of ’50,’ ‘150’ and ‘160.’
Some people seemed to have counted a fair few more fingers than most, with one person commenting: ‘1720.’
One frustrated person was unsuccessful in coming up with a solid guess, who wrote: ‘I’M FREAKING OUT IT LOOKS WEIRD.’
However, some observant puzzlers analysed the wording of the question related to the image and pointed out that not all parts of the hands were in fact ‘fingers’ – but thumbs too.
One person guessed and wrote, ‘124 + thumbs,’ while another commented, ‘125 + 5.’
Another eagle-eyed commenter wrote, ‘Wrong 84 fingers and 6 thumbs,’ to which someone challenged, ‘And still wrong.’ The individual, sarcastically correcting themselves, commented: ‘OK it’s 26 thumbs. My bad.’

From conflicting reports about which animal is pictured to images that look three dimensional and others that look as though they’re moving, these types of brain teasers have existed for decades.
An optical illusion exists because the brain is known to receive information and attempt to fill in the gaps where it thinks information is incomplete. As a result, it can sometimes create an image that isn’t quite accurate.
Neuroscientist Patrick Cavanagh, a research professor at Dartmouth College, told Vox: ‘It’s really important to understand we’re not seeing reality. We’re seeing a story that’s being created for us.’
