Two Italian tennis stars have faced off in a fiery confrontation after their Australian Open showdown.

Fabio Fognini and Salvatore Caruso came close to trading blows in a heated exchange following a thrilling five set epic at Melbourne Park.

The drama unfolded on the court moments after the match as they came face to face at the net.

They exchanged a handshake as they clashed in a verbal altercation and pointed fingers at each other at the net.

and even after Caruso had taken his seat, Fognini went over and continued berate his countryman.

The players wagged their fingers and gestured angrily at each other as their argument lasted for several minutes.

The two had to be separated by the supervisor as Caruso collected his gear and 

The confrontation overshadowed Fognini’s 4-6 6-2 2-6 6-3 7-6(12) win to progress to the third round.
