An Australian mother has been left terrified after claiming to hear a man say ‘that’s a cute one’ over her baby monitor.

Kiara had only just fallen asleep when she heard a strange sound coming from the $99 monitor in her bedroom at 1.40am on October 29.

The scared mother-of-three from Melbourne quickly woke up her partner Daniel and told him that she heard a man say, ‘mmm… that’s a cute one’ coming from the direction of the monitoring device.

‘Daniel thought someone was in the house, so he checked all the rooms but I was sure it was the monitor so I asked him to unplug it straight away and I uninstalled the app because I was so scared,’ the 20-year-old told Kidspot.

‘I didn’t want to think about all the disgusting things that they were thinking of looking at my baby.’

Kiara did not expect anything like this to happen and thought it was only a fictional story line in movies.

She explained that she spent weeks researching, reading reviews and watching YouTube videos to find the best baby monitor on the market.

She settled on the $99 Mirabella Bebe Wi-Fi 1080p Full HD Flexi Baby Camera from Kmart after finding it had no negative reviews.

After buying it Kiara and Daniel set up a complicated password to access the camera. They didn’t believe anyone else would be able to access it.

But hearing those four uncomfortable words reminded Kiara that she had been spooked by noises on the baby monitor before.

Previously, she heard creaking sounds coming from the monitor in the bedroom, despite everyone being asleep.

Kiara just assumed that it was coming from the cot because that’s where the camera was attached.

She decided to hang it on the wall and continued to hear the creaking sounds and knew something wasn’t right.

Kiara has since taken the baby monitor back to Kmart and told them of her terrifying ordeal, but is yet to hear back from them.

If she needs another baby monitor, Kiara said she will opt for one that is only voice-activated and doesn’t require a WiFi connection.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Kmart for comment.

Dennis Desmond, an Associate Lecturer in Cyber Intelligence at the University of the Sunshine Coast, said he was not surprised that the baby monitor was hacked.

He explained that it was common for the Chinese brand, Mirabella, to be ‘vulnerable’.

The company however said their products are designed to ‘international standards for a global market’.

They also said they are not aware of any other ‘hacking or vulnerability incidents’.
