‘Sam Allardyce is a genius to take these teams – when everyone believes it’s over – and gets results,’ Guardiola said.

‘If it happens once or twice then it’s lucky but not in this case as he’s done it I don’t know how many times.

‘We’ve not had much time but training has been good, we are taking the bus to West Brom to try to do a good game. They have had good and bad results. It’s not easy to take over a team during the season.

‘We’ll have to do it better than the draw last month. We had chances at the end to win, but the way we played was not good. We have to play better than we did at home to win the game.’

City had emerged victorious from each of their 10 matches since that draw with the Baggies before Christmas but Guardiola is mindful that results dictate the futures of all top-flight managers.

Asked to address Frank Lampard’s sacking by Chelsea, the Catalan said: ‘You have to win.

‘People talk about projects, they don’t exist. You have to win or you’ll be sacked. Hopefully I can see Frank soon, take him to a restaurant to see him again when lockdown is over.

‘It depends on the results, not philosophy or projects. You get results or you’ll be replaced.

‘The results give you an incredible boost of confidence, you believe the results make you play good or the other way round. Both are connected but for us it’s the end of January.

‘The leader is United, they are top at the moment. We have all games together so we’ll see. We are not top and the distance between the others is so close.’
