One of the world’s extensive collections of Dinky Toys model cars is set to go under the hammer and expected to sell for over a quarter of a million pounds.

The collection of toys, amassed over a 35-year period are expected to fetch up to £250,000 at Vectis Auctions next week.

The three-day event will begin next Tuesday, September 20, and showcase the large collection of Dinky memorabilia owned by Netherlander Robert van der Hoort. 

A Dinky Toys expert has said the prized collection is of ‘magnitude and quality are rarely seen on the open market’.

He added that the auction has already attracted interest globally from collectors.

Items up for auction include a pre-war Bentalls delivery truck expected to sell for £2,000 to £3,000 and rare Canadian issue Simpsons Sports and Race Car Set which has been given an estimate price of £1,300 – £1,600.

The Dutch collector purchased his first toy model in 1985 from a local model store in Rijssen, Netherlands, then ventured further afield to toy exhibitions throughout Holland and abroad.

The enthusiast found British Dinky Toys to be charming and had a particular fondness for the Foden model trucks of which he has 56 different versions.

One of these, a mid blue Foden 14-ton tanker with violet blue cab and chassis, light  blue tinplate rear tank, and mid-blue Supertoy is estimated to fetch between £1,600 and £2,400.

Mr van der Hoort, who likes to share his knowledge on Fodens and other Dinky Toys, has decided to part with his toy collection after three decades.

He said: ‘It is now time to let it go, I sincerely hope that all buyers enjoy and cherish my models as much as I have done.’

Vectis Auctions Dinky specialist Andrew Reed said: ‘Collections of this magnitude and quality are rarely seen on the open market. It has been a pleasure to work with Robert and to do justice to his work.

‘We have already had interest from around the world.’

The sale includes Dinky covered each decade of production, single models, trade packs, gift sets with unusual variants.
