Salma Hayek is throwing her support behind the NHS and health workers across the globe during the coronavirus pandemic.

Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, the actress, 53, shared a snap of her posing with a bright rainbow painted across her face – a symbol of ‘unity and hope’ amid the current pandemic.

Salma was seen urging others to do the same as a way of thanking medical staff working on the frontline and as an initiative to help donate meals to families in need.

Alongside her post, Salma explained: ‘I painted this rainbow on my face because many people are using rainbows to symbolize unity and hope, and to thank the #NHS and all the health workers around the world for their courage and endurance.

‘For each tagged rainbow @yumi will donate a month’s worth of meals to @FeedingAmerica to help support families in need.

‘“Rainbows in Windows” is a children’s book written by @ariannawrotethis and is illustrated by @karo_oh – it follows the story of a young boy named Amos sheltering at home with his mother. @national_health_service #thankyounhs.’

There are currently more than 2.5million cases of coronavirus worldwide, with the number of deaths now reaching over 171,000.

In the UK, recent reports reveal deaths have surpassed 17,000 and the number of cases is now over 129,000.

As health workers continue to battle the coronavirus crisis, celebrities have been showing their support via the #ClapForOurCarers initiatives, which sees the country clap and make as much noise as possible for NHS staff and key workers from their doorsteps.

Stars regularly taking part include the likes of Piers Morgan, Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, Stacey Solomon, Frankie and Wayne Bridge, with many showing their appreciation each week on social media.

Salma, meanwhile, was recently seen speaking about her nearly three decades long career in the movie industry.

She revealed in an interview with Total Film magazine that while she was taught to be passionate about ‘every single detail’ of her craft by her acting teacher, some directors haven’t let her explore her talent and one once told her to ‘speak faster and sound dumber’.

Salma said: ‘Unfortunately, I never had a lot of chances to do parts where I could use a lot of the things I learned. Or you learn them and they don’t let you.

‘I’ve had directors say to me, “Dumber and faster. Sound dumber and speak faster!”‘

Salma most recently appeared in film The Roads Not Taken, where she starred alongside Javier Bardem.

Fans will next see her in action-adventure comedy The Hitman’s Wife, as she joins a star-studded cast including the likes of Ryan Reynolds, Morgan Freeman, Samuel L. Jackson and Antonio Banderas.
