Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho said his side were ‘a team with sadness’ after his side were beaten by relegation-threatened Brighton on Sunday evening.
Leandro Trossard’s first-half goal consigned a sluggish Spurs to a 1-0 defeat on the south coast as Mourinho’s men missed the chance to put pressure on the top four after Leicester City and Manchester United dropped points this weekend.
The Portuguese manager was quick to move on from the defeat after the game, with Tottenham now 11 points behind leaders Manchester City and six behind Leicester in fourth.

Mourinho said: ‘It is five defeats from 30 matches so we can look at it in different perspectives. Every team in the Premier League has its ups and downs.
‘Now we are in a difficult moment, results, injuries and self-esteem. A team with confidence is better than a team with sadness.’
Spurs were without talismanic striker Harry Kane, who has 14 goals in 13 assists so far this season, after the England captain was injured during the club’s loss to Liverpool on Thursday night.

Gareth Bale was drafted into the starting line-up for the Brighton match on Sunday but the Welshman failed to impress and was hauled off the pitch at the hour mark.
Replacement striker Carlos Vinicius came the closest to getting on the scoresheet for Spurs, as his snapshot was smartly saved by Seagulls shot stopper Robert Sanchez.
Spurs were lucky they managed to keep Brighton’s goal tally to just one as Ben White and Aaron Conolly were denied by second-half blocks from Hugo Lloris and Toby Aldeweireld respectively.
Back to back defeats brings a sombre end to what seemed like a promising January for Moruinho’s Spurs.

Tottenham won five games this month in all competitions, reaching the FA Cup fifth round with wins over Marine and Wycombe, while they will play in April’s Carabao Cup final after their last four win over Brentford.

The Spurs boss added: ‘Maths is at the end of the season and at the end of the season let’s see where we are in the Premier League and the cups we are in.
‘The last feeling is the feeling you take home, because the last 30 minutes they showed everything I have positive feelings towards the boys.’
