Doctor teams up with personal trainer to design a work out that reverses ageing and keeps you fit

A celebrity personal trainer has teamed up with a leading doctor and dermatologist to create a workout that improves both your skin and fitness.

Ciara London, from North London, whose clients include Maya Jama and Love Island‘s Alexandra Cane, is working with GP and dermatologist Dr Anita Sturnham to create a workout which leaves skin glowing.

The workout follows research from Swedish skincare brand Foreo, which found that resistance training paired with yoga is the best combination for boosting your skin’s radiance.

The pair advise that you should begin the workout – which is recommended for all skin types – by cleansing your skin of make-up, then mixing yoga to reduce skin pigmentation, resistance exercises to stimulate blood flow, and HIIT exercises to encourage anti-ageing, before completing it with a post-workout cleanse.

Ciara says that for those suffering from acne and breakouts, moderate intensity workouts such as cycling are better suited.

And according to the trainer, those keen to boost their collagen levels should do high intensity workouts to stop the signs of ageing.

London-based trainer Ciara built the workout, which can be used by anyone to boost their skin’s health – and includes a mix of planking, squats, yoga poses and jumps to make sure all elements of the skincare regime are ticked.

Speaking of the workout she said: ‘I feel like my skin is nicer after a workout. Sometimes I walk into the gym and feel pale, washed out, and that my skin looks blemished and then, when I leave, my skin is glowing.

The first step of your workout should be to cleanse your skin

‘So, I was not surprised to see the results of the FOREO report. I suspected it, but it’s amazing to see it proven – that exercise can actually help improve the appearance of the skin.’

Advising women to go make-up free in the gym, she continued: ‘It takes confidence to head to the gym bare faced.

‘But the trouble with working out with make-up on is that it clogs the pores.

‘Then, if you also don’t remove sweat post exercise, your skin gets worse, so you want to wear more make-up to cover it – it’s catch 22.

‘A lot of females get embarrassed by sweat and redness. I always try to encourage sweat. It’s good for you, don’t be embarrassed, it means your working hard, exercising well.’

And Ciara recommends women cleanse properly following the workout, adding: ‘But it’s also important that you remove the sweat in the best possible way, or you won’t feel the benefits of working out on your skin too.’

Recommending the workout for women with busy schedules, she added: ‘I was also interested in the fact that the report ties in with people’s busy lifestyles.

‘There is an emphasis from the report on short, sharp workouts. Women feel guilty if they haven’t done 1.5 -2 hours, but actually less time than that is still good for your body, but also your skin, so the time saving element is also a plus point.’

Dr Anita Sturnham, author of the research report added: ‘We all know how important it is for our health that we exercise regularly, but the impact of exercise on your skin is something that has been little documented, until now.

‘It has been fascinating to delve deeper into the relationship between the two and I hope that this work done by FOREO will encourage others to consider certain types of exercise as a beneficial element to our skincare regimes.’
