Channel Seven wins broadcast rights to the 2020 Academy Awards

And the Oscar goes to… Channel Seven! Sunrise will kick off the 2020 Academy Awards broadcast – after Nine had the rights last year

In what can only be described as a victory for Channel Seven, the network has been announced as the official Australian broadcaster for this year’s Oscars.

Seven nabbed the screening rights from longtime rival Channel Nine, which had aired the 2019 Academy Awards ceremony.

This year’s show will air on Monday, February 10, accommodating for the time difference with LA, where the ceremony will take place on Sunday, February 9.

The network’s breakfast show, Sunrise, will be broadcasting the red carpet special.

Sunrise excitedly announced the news in a post shared on Instagram on Tuesday.  

‘@Channel7 is the new home of the #Oscars, with the 92nd Academy Awards set to air live, free and exclusive on Feb 10!’ they wrote.

‘We’ll kick off the coverage as the only Australian breakfast TV show broadcasting live from the red carpet.’ 

The actual awards show will air from 12pm, with an encore screening scheduled for 7.30pm on 7flix.

The nominees for this year’s Oscars were announced on Monday, with Joker taking out the top spot with 11 nominations.

The Joaquin Phoenix-led movie has been nominated for Best Picture, alongside Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit and Little Women.  

Marriage Story, 1917, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Parasite are also contenders.

Margot Robbie is nominated for Best Supporting Actress in Bombshell.
